Nine-Year-Old Volunteer Finds a Way to Give Back Imagine a nine-year-old so socially conscious that she gave up her traditional birthday party so children from impoverished families could have a birthday party of their own.
That’s exactly what Emily Amundson of Golden Valley did.
At her recent birthday party, Emily, pictured in the pink shirt, asked friends to participate in a “birthday party supply drive” for Catholic Charities’ Branch I food shelf. Instead of toys for her, she asked her guests to bring basic party supplies – cake mixes, candles, birthday hats and small gifts – to donate to the food shelf.
Emily also posted flyers in her neighborhood asking for birthday party supplies. The day of her party, she and her guests walked through the neighborhood, picking up the items.
Emily delivered the materials to Branch I, giving parents who use the food shelves the opportunity to give their child a birthday party they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.
Emily’s gift to the food shelf is key to helping keep the shelves stocked, especially given that Catholic Charities' food shelves recorded a 20% increase in use in 2006. Community involvement – of citizens of any age – is vital, and Emily proves you’re never too young to make a difference.
