Supporting the Tenants at the Exodus Residence
For the past year, the young adults group at St. Olaf Catholic Church has held monthly birthday parties honoring the guests at the Exodus Residence. For some residents in this affordable housing facility, this is the only birthday celebration they will have.
Each month, six volunteers from the parish provide cake and a festive atmosphere for the residents to enjoy. The parties are one way St. Olaf’s busy, young professionals can reach out and volunteer, said Amy Kotsmith, a volunteer coordinator for the group.
“We have a lot of fun and the residents seem to enjoy it,” Kotsmith said.
In addition to the monthly party, St. Olaf parishioners donate toiletries and other personal items so that birthday bags can be given to each resident celebrating their birthday that month.
A Close Collaboration with St. OlafThe birthday parties are just one of the many ways St. Olaf has partnered with Catholic Charities to help the Exodus Residence. Along with owning the building, the church supports residents through serving a monthly homemade meal, offering holiday dinners and giving winter gift packages. The parish community also invites residents to participate in music concerts, prayer services and community volunteer events.
St. Olaf Catholic Church is one of many Twin Cities parishes helping Catholic Charities serve those most in need.
