St. Joe’s Chess Club Teaches Youth the Art of Strategy

Each Wednesday evening, a dozen children at St. Joseph’s Home for Children sit quietly, contemplating their next move.

The children participate in St. Joe’s weekly chess club, a favorite activity at St. Joe’s for more than 10 years. Chess has both educational and therapeutic value for children of all ages and skill levels. The game of strategy helps teach children courtesy and sportsmanship, as well as patience, critical reasoning skills and how to plan ahead.

“What is truly remarkable about the much-loved weekly event is the fact that it is one of the rare occasions when several children are gathered together in perfect silence,” said Mary Schoelch, volunteer coordinator at St. Joe’s.

Volunteers run the chess club. More volunteer chess enthusiasts are welcome to teach – and learn from – the children. For more information about volunteer opportunities at Catholic Charities, call 612-664-8600.
