St. Joe’s Expands Therapeutic Services with Donor’s Help

Children have more room to jump, swing and scoot at St. Joseph’s Home for Children with the addition of a second occupational therapy room.

“The room provides an optimal space for us to allow more movement during therapy sessions,” said Occupational Therapist Nancy Van Thorre.

A donor who saw the need for more space to treat children with emotional and behavioral disorders made the occupational therapy expansion possible. The larger room supports children’s development by offering additional therapeutic tools and training techniques.

St. Joe’s occupational therapy department creates opportunities for physical movement because it is essential to brain development, Van Thorre said. Through movement, children also build their gross motor skills, strengthen muscles and practice self-regulation.

Therapy can have a calming effect that lasts for hours. Much like rocking a baby for comfort, up-and-down or back-and-forth motion can calm a child’s brain and body.

St. Joe’s is able to provide comprehensive mental health and therapeutic services for children in need because of the continuing support of the community.
