Mother-daughter Volunteer Team Supports Parents in Need

When Jennifer Libra signed up to be a child care volunteer with Catholic Charities, she didn’t realize it would be such a family affair. Not only does she support parents and children who use Catholic Charities’ Family Services programs, her mother Mary Libra and sister Alyssa Troje join in her volunteer efforts.

Together, the mother-daughters trio cares for children each week in the child care room at Seton Services while parents attend the Circle of Parents group for single moms.

The Parenting Services program strengthens the whole family through support groups such as the Circle of Parents. The Libras play and read with the children while moms build their parenting skills. Jennifer enjoys interacting with the whole family, both the parents and the children.

As a single mom with a 21-year-old son, Jennifer knows what the parents are going through. She wants to help them succeed in improving the lives of their children. They can do that through the Circle of Parents, where mothers gather to share advice and support each other. “They’re there because they choose to be, not because they have to be,” Jennifer said.

Each week, it is also a place for the Libra family to gather and share in giving back through volunteering. It makes coming back every week a truly family-strengthening experience.
