Lenten Offerings

Have you decided to give up something during Lent, something to remind you of the sacrifice of the Lenten season?

This year, create a Lenten tradition to help those in need. Consider giving up something this Lenten season and giving to those most in need.

Ideas to Help You Create a New Tradition

  • Give up an hour of watching television each week. Use the time to volunteer at a charity.
  • Encourage your children to contribute half of their weekly allowance to a charity of their choice. Have the children research the charity they choose so they know how their gift makes a difference.
  • Each time you visit a grocery store during Lent, purchase an item to donate to a food shelf.
  • Give up 30 minutes of your personal cell phone use. Use the time to call your legislator to voice your concern for policies that impact the poor. (Look up your legislator and find out about Catholic Charities' legislative prioriites in the Advocacy section.)
  • Give up 30 minutes of magazine reading each week. Use the time to write your legislator a letter about the importance of supporting policies that impact the poor.
  • Give up your daily latte or your weekly dinner out with the family. Donate the money you would have spent to a charity of your choice.
  • If you give up candy or sweets, donate the saved money to the food shelf for basic necessities. Even a little bit adds up.
  • Set aside a half hour of computer time to visit sites that educate others about social justice issues. Or, use that time to volunteer at a site where you can teach computer basics or other skills.
  • Give up buying new clothing; take an extra step and go through your closet and donate what you no longer wear.
  • Have your children collect clothing/toys/school supplies for children in need.
  • Bring your own lunch to work; the money you saved on a meal out can go toward providing a meal at an emergency shelter.
