When a child needs protection due to abuse or neglect, is placed by the courts or lacks family to care for them, they may come to St. Joseph's Home for Children. St. Joe's Central Intake provides basic needs and emergency shelter placement for children ages 0 - 17 years referred by a county worker, police, probation officer or court. St. Joe's Central Intake facilitates 1,200 admissions to the county shelter system each year.

- Food, clothing, medical attention and basic needs
- For youth referred by Hennepin County: referral to shelter foster homes, other shelters or St. Joseph's Home for Children's Emergency Shelter
- For youth referred by another county or government entity: referral for placement in St. Joseph's Home for Children's Emergency Shelter
- Temporary shelter while waiting for placement
- Medical checkup at St. Joe's Community Health Clinic
