Catholic Social Teaching

The work of Catholic Charities, including that of the Office for Social Justice, is deeply rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. Our office offers a variety of workshops and materials about this body of work, and many of these are available here on our website. If you’re interested in a more in-depth educational opportunity for your parish or another group, please contact us.

Catholic Social Teaching is often referred to as the “best kept secret” of Catholicism, but, as the US Conference of Catholic Bishops acknowledge, Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith.  Deeply rooted in the biblical tradition, “Catholic Social Teaching” refers to a body of official writings issued by popes, bishops, and other prominent faith leaders.

On our Catholic Social Teaching pages, you will find most of the official social teaching documents of the Catholic Church, along with a variety of resources to help you explore this rich body of moral teaching. You will also find tools to assist you in teaching others to know and appreciate the wisdom and the challenge that is embodied in this teaching. In the words of the U.S. Catholic bishops:

"Far too many Catholics are not familiar with the basic content of Catholic social teaching. More fundamentally, many Catholics do not adequately understand that the social teaching of the Church is an essential part of Catholic faith. This poses a serious challenge for all Catholics, since it weakens our capacity to be a Church that is true to the demands of the Gospel. We need to do more to share the social mission and message of our Church."
